Martlet shot down by U-278-ID ?

On 3 May 1944 U-278 shot down a British "Martlet" {Wildcat}.
Query-what was Pilot ID and fate?
Apparently the Martlet was from either the British excort carrier's:
HMS Activty
HMS Fencer

Re: Martlet shot down by U-278-ID ?

The Martlet concerned was from HMS Activity, but it wasn't shot down.
From the ships log:
'0443, launched 1x Swordfish & 1x Wildcat [Martlet] on A/S strike
Attacked U-boat 67.48N, 01.45W, results unobserved'
Both aircraft landed on Activity at 0620.

HMS Fencer had Swordfish in the air at the same time, and one of these would be the second biplane spotted by 278. The Fencer log just states that a Swordfish reported attacking a submarine without further details.

No aircraft were lost from either Activity or Fencer around that date.

Hope this helps.

Bruce

Note: The webmaster Gudmundar Helgason of website http://uboat.net/
has a query:
"Yeah, just that, if someone knows the aircraft (or rather its
squadron/carrier).

I am working on adding new attacks (1941-1942) to complete the listing we
have. From that work might come more unknowns that we can then follow."
