mustang forced landing near Battle in Sussex

MY friend remembers when he was a boy walking across a meadow near Battle in Sussex when a Mustang landed wheels up and slid straight towards him, he said the pilot an American got out with his nose all bleeding sat on the wing and lit a ciggie , he then offered my froend some gum, I was wondering if theres any way to find out about this incident i.e. pilot , squadron what actually happened was it shot down or mechanical problems .
unfortunatly my friend can only recall it was within 2 miles of Battle town and not long after a Liberator crashed nearby, he remembers it was took away on a lorry next day, he cannot remember the exact yearsometime in the early forties,
Id love to identfy this Pilot etc.. as a surprise for him so if anyone can help Id appreciate it.
