I'm always surprised to see that the Japanese still offer "flat" colour profiles in their otherwise high-quality publications.

Well,

this magazine created by non-Japanese researchers, same is applicable for profiles.

But further to question "why Japanese do it like that" - well, samurai swords are also done 2000 years in same way :)

Re: flat color profiles - possibly less cost for publisher to pay for "flat" art vs. "realistic" profile artwork (takes less time for the artist to create); probably costs less to print (uses a narrower range of colors); possible desire to simply illustrate the basic camouflage colors (rather than interpret the nuances of weathering, shading, fading, etc.).

I personaly do not enjoy seeing flat aircraft profiles: it takes away some of the magic...
