Re: Photos + 8-18-05

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the new pics of the landed planes on the Zombor (Sombor) airfield. I have some notes to the one, showing the nose of the natural metal B-24, #29, photo ID: 6202072398.

15. USAAF., 461. BG B-24L, #29, S/N: 44-49428 (not 44-49429 !!!) landed on Pécs airfield in Southern Hungary on March 26, 1945 in Russian zone, not in Sombor!
There was another 461. BG B-24 indeed, which landed on Zombor airfield, Hungary (now Sombor, Serbia) some weeks earlier: B-24J-10-FO, S/N: 42-51610, which belonged to the same, 765th squadron. (This is why she could be marked with the same number.)
This photo shows this B-24J with the typical B-24J-10-FO nose. This is not a B-24L model! B-24L, S/N: 44-49428 landed at Pécs, -not Sombor- in the next month with the same black’29’ number.
The resolution of the picture is not the best, so I cannot see all the details in the background on the tail section of the other B-24, but I assume she is B-24J-15-FO, S/N: 42-51990 of the 455. BG, which also landed at Sombor airfield on March 8, 1945.

Do you have any other picture showing that plane in the background? Is there any side number visible between her tail section and national insigna? It would solve this question. Also, any pictures showing the tail parts would identify these birds. Thanks again,

Gabor
