Bf109 tail, unusual style victory bars

Hello everyone,

More a matter of curiousity than a specific question...

On eBay was auctioned recently a photo of a Bf109 tail with 16 victory bars. All of these show either roundels or white American stars [none look like red stars]. But the unusual thing was that 8 of the bars each had a nice row of 3 roundels or stars from top to bottom, while 2 bars contained 2 roundels or stars each. Url is appended below.

This is the 1st time I've ever seen victory bars marked in this manner. Does anyone know the unit that the 109 belonged to? Or perhaps why the bars were marked in this way? It can't be for the number of kills, cos that would have meant more bars.... could it be related to the "point system" that was introduced in the RvT period? IIRC between 1 to 3 points were awarded, depending on the nature of the kill.

Any takers on this one?
