Staka. 5./StG 77 Question.

Doug

Thank you as always for your efforts and help with my request.

Andy F-P has furnished myself with the following information:

The Officer who held the post of Staka. 5./StG 77 after Amelung was:

Oberleutnant Alfred Maué DKiG 21-08-1942, 'Hero of Sevastopol', who was credited with destroying Maxim Gorky I during the summer of 1942. Furthermore:

'Junkers Ju 87 Stukageschwader of the Russian Front', the Osprey book by John Weal, on page 36 states: 'A sustained Blitz against long-range gun emplacements beginning on 14th June came to a climax three days later with the destruction of the biggest of them all. Contemporary records credit StG77's Oberleutnant Maué with knocking out Maxim Gorky I. The Soviet version is that Coastal Battery 30 - its official designation - ceased firing simply because it had run out of ammunition, and was then blown up by its crew.'

This info came about as a result of researching a Wehrpass to a 5./StG 77 Bordfunker, which has a signature of Oberleutnant Maué recording the Bordfunker as Gefallen.

So far this is all the information I have, so if anyone can shed any further infomation (in particular a portrait photo) on this man please let me know. I can assure you that it will be very well received indeed.

Regards Richard.
