This is not a standard option with phpBB, sorry.
There are some possibilities by modding the forum, but these actions vary from simple to complex, depending on your knowledge of php etc.
As a short term answer I can only advice you to use the option included in the lower screen display topic from previous... that can be adjusted to show only the latest posts ranging from a day to a year.
For the time being this really is what you'll get in terms of functionality.
phpBB 3.0 has been announced, so who knows what that will bring.
