not a direct answer but; I did notice too this pattern.
The fact is that camouflage pattern is unique in for each animal, so unique that it is precisely the clew zoologists use to recognize - inside a race - one animal from another one. I do recommend you to read the magnificent book "Leopards of Londolozi", for example, where this clew is very well explained and illustrated (The hint of this book - and the film too - was to established Leopards generation inside the area). Stefaan do know this book and this South African reserve, I'm sure.
If you are able to recognize on that last picture the same pattern we can see on all Werra's cub picture; be sure it's the one.
Now, concerning this cub story "in" luftwaffe I'm not very helpful.

PS: Sorry I did forget. Normally "they" use dots pattern on face/head since it's easier to spot details in this area than in the middle of a body.
