There are five ranks for the Legion d'Honneur:
Chevalier (= Knight)
Officier (=Officer)
Commandeur (=Commander)
Grand Officier (=Great Officer)
Grand-Croix (=Great Cross)
I don't know the precise rule, but I know that French people will always enter the order at the rank of Knight, and then may rise their ranks later (but I don't know if they can "jump" one rank). On the other hand foreign people may be nominated direct to one of the highest ranks.
So Bernard Dupérier received other awards of the Légion d'Honneur before the Grand-Croix in 1956, but I don't know how to find that.
