Re: Information Concerning Loss of Leutnant and Adjutant - 08.04.1943

Hi,

This FW 190 A-4, marked '<< + ', actually belonged to the Kommandeur, Oblt. Fritz Schroeter, who was on leave when Leutnant Graf von Westerholt was killed. III./S.K.G. 10 was attacking New Zealand troops eleven kilometres south-east of Mezzouna on the afternoon of 8 April 1943 when Lt. Graf von Westerholt's FW 190 received a direct hit from an anti-aircraft gun. This was his 89th mission in the Tunisian campaign.

Two photographs and a Claes Sundin colour profile of this aircraft can be found in the book written by Morten Jessen and myself, Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in North Africa, which was published by Classic Publications in 2004.

Cheers,
Andrew A.
