Re: Dornier Do17z data plate identification
Steve,
Many thanks for the further advice and for pointing me in the direction of the web-site. It really is a mine of information and whilst I couldn't find the precise Ln reference to match that on the Lorenz data plate there was one that was very close and confirms the FuG16 association. I have made some further enquiries of those who run the site to see if they can tell me more.
Mike,
Thanks for the information re the FuG16 installation. I too believe that it was only the early version of this system that was installed in bombers - it generally being associated with single seat fighters.
The Dornier plate and the Lorenz plate came from the same source but I am uncertain if they are from the same aircarft - it seems unlikely.
The Dornier plate was recovered by the Tonbridge Battle of Britain Museum in 1990 and relates to the crash of a Do17z on 16 August 1940. It was shot down by Frederick "Taffy" William Higginson flying a Hurricane from no.56 squadron and crashed on the beach at Whitstable. The pilot Oblt. Brandenburg and all the crew were killed. That's about all I know I'm afraid so would be very grateful to any members who may be able to add additional information.
Regards
Nick
