Re: Hptm. Hans-Karl Kamp, III./NJG 4

Stab/NJG 4 was indeed addressed at Chenay from April to the second half of August 1944. This is confirmed in surviving German documents (NARA RG 242, T-971 rolls 8 and 18) and in the DEFE 3 ULTRA documentation. However, there was no airfield, landing ground, fieldstrip, emergency landing ground, satellite or dummy located there, according both German and Allied sources (2,500+ pages of material covering airfields in France). What we have here is the very common occurrence of a Geschwaderstab setting up its offices in a cushy château within commuting distance of an airfield for reasons of comfort and as protection from enemy air attacks on the airfield. If aircraft were assigned to the Stab, they were maintained at the airfield, of course. Accommodations 15-16 km from the airfield were not unusual for a headquarters and staff.
