still 'MIA' in Belgium - 28/06/44 ?
Hello,
For years, I have searched the identity of a German pilot shot down (and killed) in combat on the 28th June 1944, 2 km SSW of Nivelles (South of Brussels) in Belgium. 'Resistance' report & ground witness confirm this event.
This claim was obviously made by 1st Lt. Robert E. MILES (20 FG/ 55 FS) at 07.58, location given as 'Nivelles, Belgium' (via F.Olynyk)
As we know the 'claimer', who should be the victim?
In "La Luftwaffe face au débarquement allié " by Jean-Bernard Frappé, the French author quotes Ogfr. Karl HÖPPNER of 3./JG 5 still MIA in Arras area. His Bf 109 G-6/AS (Yellow 8, WNr.440216) left Manancourt at about 06.30.
Nivelles is quite far from that 'hot' area (+150km) but who knows?
Of course, we may not rule out a ferry flight or others units beside dayfighter.
No info in VLM.
By the way, does anyone have a copy of the Personal Encounter Report filled by Lt. MILES? No found it in the NA.
I thank you very much for your attention and send my very best regards for 2012.
