Hi Larry
Are you aware of the
Map Archive of Wojskowy Instytut Geograficzny (Polish Military Geographical Institute) 1919 – 1939. Available for viewing or downloading are European maps of this period in various scales. These include German maps and in particular the 1:100,000 scale Großblatt maps. Based upon the Polish maps, these include an incredible level of topographical detail, showing individual buildings and farm names.
Germany, Poland and most of Eastern Europe is covered in comprehensive detail, but there are also maps of Italy, France and London. The maps date from 1938 to 1944. I'm not sure about Scandinavia, since my reason for using the maps was operations in Russia from 1941, for which they are an excellent resource. But this may be covered elsewhere on the site.
To do justice to the detail of these large maps, they have been produced online at 400dpi, 30 to 50Mb and between 12000 and 14000 pixels. Given the sizes, many computers may have difficulty dealing with the maps. On occasion the maps took a while to load. When I saved them I also needed to resize them in order to view them on most standard viewing software. They are however well worth the effort. An excellent resource!
