I think this is kind of fantasy, I do not think in WWII FBI had jurisdiction over army, so how BI Director J. Edgar Hoover could have some army officer killed “if anything went wrong during their missions”? I know many think Hoover was a classic SOB and FBI under his command did some dirty work, but FBI in its worst still never degrades itself to the same level of Gestapo or NKVD. And besides, even Gestapo or NKVD would not send an air force pilots to the front, and then assign someone to keep an eye to him and kill him if “anything went wrong during their missions”, what was the logic behind this assignment? they would arrest him already if they suspect his loyalty
