Thanks for all your replies - I really didn't have a clue!

To date I have been using the Newspaper Library in Colindale NW London (not far from the RAF Museum). It has been helpful when the newspaper for the area lists an individual who has died either at the time or subsequently but if someone is not listed you never know if they were a casualty or not and there are only so many weekly newspaper editions you can read in one sitting!
