RAF Airgunner claims in 1944

In Steve Darlows excellent book " Sledgehammers for Tintacks " about the RAF raids against the flying bomb sites he describes in great detail the raids on the night of 16/17 June when the RAF heavies had many combats with Luftwaffe Nightfighters. He describes several incidents where gunners get confirmed kills against fighters and, although the Luftwaffe shot 28 bombers down, RAF gunners are credited with 17 confirmed kills and 6 damaged.

Was this the best night of the war for RAF gunners ?

Did the Luftwaffe really have 17+ fighters lost in combat on this night?
