Re: ID help: Heinkel h-111 Kg 26 Verdal - Norway

Hello,

I've seen the application of the a/c code letter to the fronts of the wings of other He111s, especially on KGr100 a/c during 1940. However, I've also noted it on a few photos of KG26 a/c. I'm looking for examples to make sure that the pattern and timing of the use of this is illustrated accurately in the EoE Profiles. My experience is that if one a/c in a Gruppe has this during a particular time period, all a/c in the unit would similarly have it. So very likely, all He111s of II./KG26 probably carried this on the front of the wings, just outboard of the engines, during the spring of 1940. This is the first time I remember seeing a two-letter code on the wings.

I just ran a DB search, and I found this same pattern in a light color on 1H+FM of 4./KG26, down at Sneaton Whitby Yorkshire England on 03.09.40, and an He111 of 5./KG26, 1H+HN, in a dark color (probably red) on both wings about 05.40. Also 1H+DN of the same Staffel (dark color) down on the ice on a lake in Sweden on 14.05.40. The questions now are:

a) when did this practice start?

b) how long did it continue?

c) did the other Gruppen of KG26 also use this marking?

Addressing more directly the subject of John Fredrik's post, if Robert is correct, and he almost always is, we're looking for other photos of 1H+CC. I've already checked the EoE photo DB, and nothing turns up there, at least in a searchable form. So that is what you're looking for are other photos of an a/c with that code, and an incident relating to a FL by a Stab II./KG26 a/c during the spring of 1940 in Norway. Since this is a time-frame gap that I have yet to fill, this could be a likely EoE Profile candidate if we can find further photos of this one.

Regards,
