Re: Bf 109G-14 at Salzburg-Maglan A/F
Hi Roland,
Many years ago, Thomas H. Hitchcock and I had a long correspondence over this 109. I too initially thought I saw “X33156” on its fin. However, after much discussion, Tom convinced me that it was actually Erla-built G-14, WNr. 463156. In this photo, the heavy overspray on its fin cap does a good job of disguising its true Werknummer.
Additional views of this aircraft confirm its correct identity as an Erla-built G-14: “G” cowl bumps; tall wooden tail unit; short tail wheel leg; under wing Morane mast; and a missing Erla Haube. Finally, unlike many G-14s from the 463XXX and 464XXX series, it features the smaller oil tank and corresponding lower oil filler hatch.
