I have heard that Hans Grotz was severely wounded earlier in the war (lost a leg IIRC) and hence converted from being a Flugzeugführer to Beobachter. Could any of you confirm this? Is there an earlier entry about Hans Grotz in your losses database?

In any case, the loss of Hans Grotz was a severe blow to I./KG66, which was still more or less in a start up phase. He was very experienced and an example for younger crews, both in professional skill and character..
