III./JG 1 on 20 August 1943
For the interested party:
“From 20 August to the end of the month, there were no more air combats for JG 1 and JG 11 that are worth mentioning. All of the Gruppen filled this period with practice and training flights as well as the customary escort missions over the area of the Deutschen Bucht. In connection with this, III./JG 1 suffered a loss on 20 August when Uffz. Ewald Thiele from 9. Staffel failed to return from a mission over the Zuidersee; he was probably the victim of engine damage as he was observed attempting to ditch his Messerschmitt but crashed into the water instead.”
