Hi,
I would suggest that they are the first three digits of the WNr. Quite often the number would be chalked or painted on removable parts or panels ( as still happens today) so that they had more chance of staying with their aircraft, particularly in field or other maintenance facilities. Larger panels made by the aircraft manufacturer often had their own WNr etched data plate attached, but even then you can still occasionally find a chalked no on the same panel.
Even the weatherproof covers seemed to always have a WNr stencilled somewhere on them.
