26-27 Aug 44: airfield hit by 9th AAF (probably fighter-bombers) – aircraft destroyed on the ground claimed.
At that time, D-L was being used as a staging airfield (Absprunghafen) for Ju 52 aircraft used to evacuate wounded, key personnel, Luftwaffenhelferinnen, and others from the airfields to the west and southwest of there. There was very heavy transport traffic in and out of D-L and the Allies knew about it through ULTRA and "Y" intercepts. At times in late August, there were as many as 60 transports on the ground there at one time, so they made for a very good target.
I will be interested in finding out which units lost the Ju 52s, too.
