Re: KG40 in the Med Autumn 1941
According to Christopher Shores during early September 1941 6 Fw 200 and 9 He 111, all from KG40, arrived in Greece for operation over the Gulf of Suez. area, some of them of each type were equipped to drop torpedos.I do no belive that KG 40 main duties here was to o help in supplying German forces in North Africa, especially with fuel.
On 6th September 2 Fw 200 had taken off from Greece at 15:58 and 16:03 on an Bew.Aufkl. to the Red Sea. However shortly afterwards at 16:25 Fw 200 C WNr. 0007(?) F8+GH crashed into the sea near Cape Sounion and blew up, Oblt. Hans Neumann and crew all killed. The second carried on, attacking a ship in the Gulf of Suez at 21:27 om which the crew claimed to have achieved a hit, and landed on airfield Eleusis at o4:37. A very long trip indeed.
