In his book, Otmar Gotterbarm describes the bombing of Augsburg on 25 and 26 February 1944 and the crashes of three Canadian bombers on their return flight over the Swabian mountains. He combines the crew members’ original reports and the memories of one of the female armaments workers buried alive [literally, here it may mean “who experienced the bombing”] with the accounts of the local population and documentation from multiple perspectives, conveys lived contemporary history and fills a gap in the historiography of the air war. Since the presentation is centred on individuals and their perceptions, the book is always exciting to read.
