4./JG53 Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 (1531). Shot down during escort sortie for Bf109 Jabos attack on London and abandoned over Townings Farm, North Common, Chailey, near Haywards Heath, 4.45 p.m. Possibly one of those claimed by S/L R.R.S. Tuck of No.257 Squadron. FF Fw Alfred Berg baled out and captured unhurt landing at Roseland Farm, Plumpton. Aircraft White 3 + – 100% write-off.
Site excavated by the Wealden Aviation Archaeological Group in 1973. Remains of shattered Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine and propeller boss salvaged.
