I too think that the D-Day stripes are too thin so as long shadows.
But back to the quest - surely a search for his Air Force Record would give the Sqn? I presume the pilot was British and was not a casualty in WW2? If not British there are many Allied Nations who hold service records that can be accessed?
Have you tried London Gazette for awards etc as this can sometimes give further details and service number?
