Re: 2/606 Loss off Ireland 11 Oct 40
Very interesting and useful exchange of information.
.
7T+EH (FF Vetterl). Peter’s details appear to clear up the location of its loss, in that it cannot be Liverpool Bay as reported heretofore. The locations of the lifeboat stations mean Caernarfon Bay has to be correct.
.
7T+HH (FF Hagen). I cannot find ‘Marthalyn’ on any map or Google Maps/Earth. Can anyone provide more detail on this location ? The spelling must be different. It would help with the route of the aircraft.
Is this aircraft a Z-3 or Z-5 ?
.
7T+EK (FF Richter). It seems the reference in Williams logbook to 3 of the Dornier crew being picked up refers to the 7T+EH aircraft. There must have been much confusion that evening in 611 Squadron trying to sort out ‘who got who’ – and we are still at it 74 years later ! Watkins in his Combat Report states he saw one or two men in the dinghy (7T+EK), and remember Williams did not see this as he had already returned to base due to damage (and on orders from Watkins).
.
With Peter’s entries a new problem arises. Where do we fit in the claims of Heath, and Angus/Pattison plus 312 Squadron ? They must also have attacked some of the Dorniers.
.
Regards,
.
Martin.
