Re: Grand Duchy of Luxembourg & RAF

Out of interest, I was told on a visit to Luxembourg that on 10th October 1941 to be precise, the Germans carried out a census of the population who they considered to be of Germanic origin and asked if they considered themselves as German. Amazingly 98% said 'no' which slightly upset the Nazis, who introduced compulsory conscription for young men, which in turn lead to a general strike! However this was countered by arrests and executions and martial law, so the many young Luxembourgers could not help being conscripted, and sadly many ended up on the Russian Front. Unfortunately Russian soldiers often treated them very harshly even when they tried to 'surrender' as the Russians were ignorant of the situation and thought they were German. Hundreds died in captivity and were never given the opportunity to join the Allies. I would be very surprized if there were many Luxembourgers who managed to join the RAF.
