They were assigned to the 427BS(H) of the 303BG (8AF) and were flying a mission to bomb Mannheim, Germany. They were hit by flak & the a/c was seen to explode. The pilot/co-pilot/navigator were all KIA. The non-comm
crew (six of them) were captured and became POWs.
