On 25 July 1943, the 8th Air Force attacked Hamburg and Kiel. At this time the Allied fighters could not reach the area, and only B-17s flew during this operation.
So if your mother saw a fighter being shot down, it was a German one. If it was a bomber it was an American one. There were several losses on both sides, and a more precise location will be needed to identify it.
