The first photo was taken about 13-Jun-42, not at all near the time of his death. The second photo looks to be about the same time. As for the third photo, how to we know it is Marseille? It looks as though the face and head are swathed in gauze, as if burned. Marseille never suffered an injury like that.
It was not at all unusual for soldiers in the desert to look "gaunt". Bad rations, etc. led to many looking very thin and many had dysentery.
