Re: Stab III./KG 40 and Staffelkapitän 2./906

The first image attached is the current evidence I have of Willi Gaul taking over as Staffelkapitän of 2./906, scanned from one of his photo albums. Unfortunately I do not have precise dates but believe from Flugbuch entries, etc. that it is October 1941.

The second image comes from a scrapbook I obtained with Willi Gaul's documents and comes from an article in Luftflotte West's magazine of 11th September 1942 featuring an article on 8 holders of the Bomber Clasp in Gold who were flying with a long-range bomber group (it was III./KG 40). From the references I have, I believe Gaul became Ia of III./KG 40 in June 1942. Again I do not have a precise date. Interestingly Gaul had previously been awarded the Reconnaissance Clasp in Gold on 12th November 1941 (and not the Bomber Clasp) so he must have obtained a bomber version to align with his new role.

Later references mention Gaul as 'Staffelkapitän' at the time he was with III./KG 40 but I do not know exactly which Staffel this was so any help on refining any of this information would be great.

Thank you
