Wing Cmdr Frank Griffiths was a friend of my father's and I have just had another look at his book. The Eurekas were at the top of Rheims and Orleans Cathedrals and flying at 2,000 feet Griffiths says the range was 60 miles. Once they got the bearing they dropped down again to around 200ft.
In the book there is also mention of 'S' Phones used in 1943 to call up the reception party.
