Interesting question and after studying Heinkel documents and technical drawings, I am convinced that the nosewheel was not steerable. The misunderstanding may be the result of the fact that the nosewheel had to make a turn of 90 degrees, so that it could fold into the nosewheel bay under the cockpit section.
