Re: Forlorn Bf109
I have come across of another photo of this aircraft, which was reported to have been taken after the battle of Yukhnov of early March 1942.
On 5 March 1942 Soviet forces under General Golubov recaptured Yukhnov, 125 miles east of Smolensk, an important rail center and supply base for the German army on the central sector of the front. The town, which was protected by a formidable double row of fortifications, fell after a fierce struggle lasting several days, during which Soviet troops fought their way through the battered streets and engaged in house-to-house fighting.
An odd variation of the IV./JG 51 emblem sported on a wreck of the Bf 109 F-2 "Yellow 9", or perhaps "White 9", with the tattered boot being orientated backward was recorded by the victorious Soviet Army cameraman after the battle.
Nothing to do with the Stalingrad battle for sure.
