Re: 7.Seenotstaffel 1942
Hello,
The photograph depicted in Post#1, does not include Sgt Allen FAWCETT RAAF. The shot was taken at Silloth during Tony Gurry's operational training. (L-R Tony Gurry, Tom Errington, Herb Trounce and Errol Royston) Trounce was later replaced by Allen Fawcett.
10-7-1942
No.459 Sqn. RAAF
Hudson IIIA FH300 "M"
Took off Idku 0135 detailed for a shipping strike. Attacked a destroyer in a convoy but the bombs hung up. With one engine damaged by flak and the other on fire the Hudson was forced to ditch. The crew were rescued after 30 hours in their punctured dinghy by a Do 24 seaplane*. The pilot of the Do 24, Ofw Paul Erdmann, was forced to taxi the last 50k to Tobruk, as the main spar had fractured on landing. They were handed over to the Italians as captives, but later transferred to the Germans after 9-9-1943.
