Many thanks for your comprehensive reply.....it is a bit of a mystery and I was also very surprised not to find anything. I've seen a photo of said gentleman in flying gear so maybe my friend has the wrong aircraft type. He is trying to get more details from his relatives but I guess this one will stay closed for now.
