I must say that I would seriously doubt the truth of that statement. If you think about it, where would this P-47 go after strafing those American troops. It might get through any German fighters, but the minute it approached a German airfield to land, every gunner and his grandmother would be firing at it. Remember the mission of the ground flak units: If it flies, it dies! They were hard enough on their own a/c just imagine what they would do to one in American markings.
