Re: March 7th 1944

From the book "Fifteenth Air Force against the Axis":
On one of the few missions flown outside Italy, a raid on the submarine base at Toulon destroyed several magazines in a munitions factory and damaged dry docks and several submarines. Of the Fortresses dispatched, only forty-eight from the 97th and 301st Bomb Groups attacked the target, as half of those dispatched did not bomb. Crews reported moderate, inaccurate flak and an attack by 15 Bf 109s and Fw 190s against the 301st BG did not claim any bombers, but gunners claimed one destroyed and one probable. The fighter escort, 57 P-38s from the 1st and 14th FG, tangled with 20 enemy fighters and claimed one destroyed and one probable, without confirmation either.
