When the need arose, a senior officer and his staff were given command of a number of units operating in a particular area. Hallensleben was KG 2 Kommodore by the time his Gefechtsverband was set up (using the Geschwaderstab). KG 2 itself had been inactive since the bombing of Eindhoven during Operation Market-Garden, September 1944.
