Re: C-47 shot down over Channel Islands, 30 October 1944
Hello Laurent.
30th October 1944.
C-47 43-48592.313rd Transport Sqn.,31st Transport Group,302nd ATW.
Shot down by light flak just off of the north coast of the island of Jersey approx. near Bouley Bay. Aircraft was ferrying US personal from Paris to Cherbourg at night, when it became lost near island. The a/c had spent some time flying up and down island with navigation lights on when fired on.Commanding officer of flak battery was subsequently reduced in the ranks.
11 crew and passengers died in heavy seas. All given military funerals by local German troops.
1 crew survived - Pilot - 1st Lt.Robert B.Blackeler who was captured.
The a/c props are on display in a local museum and the wreck is used by local scuba diving clubs.I can also give you a full list of the dead crew/passengers,if I can find them!
I also have an account of the incident which is part of an article written about Allied POWs in Jersey! I could forward this to you if you like?
