Re: Welter's Me 262 A-1a

Hi Chris,

firstly, the jet was Me262 V2 Werke Nummer 170056 - often photographed with the radar aerial installation.

Secondly, IMHO it is worth verifying what Gebhard Aders wrote in the 1970s - what is the evidence that Welter "was given" this aircraft, or that he flew any Me262 in October 1944?

The only documentary evidence I have seen is that Welter flew (probably) Werke Nummer 170095 KD+EA at Rechlin-Lärz, starting in November 1944. This Me262 began to be fitted with night-flying instruments/equipment at the end of October 1944 ("Einbau v. Zusatzbeleuchtung für Nachtflug u. Stellungsanseige für Landeklappen"). In the second half of November 1944, Welter made a night-time flight (his first night flight in the Me262?) in preparation for operational flying ("Nachtflug als Einsatzvorbereitung (Oblt. Welter) wurde durchgeführt. Flugzeug ist nachteinsatz-klar.”). 170095 was not fitted with radar. (Source: BArch RL 36/86)

Cheers

Rod
