Thomas was the commander of 999. leichte Division. Most sources say that his plane disappeared on its way from Sardinia to Tunisia during the night of 5 / 6 May 1943 (the NARA divisional guide gives 7 May). Does anybody know in which plane he was travelling, or any other details about the case?
