Hello Russell and Frank, great to see two members of the esteemed MAW team respond!

Russell, having looked at Morrison online at Frank's suggestion, I assume that the following passage of Morrison is erroneous - "Credit is due also to the intercepting Beaufighters, two of which were lost. They not only forced the German fighter cover to turn back, but knocked down a couple of Junkers planes."

I was surprised that the escorting ships included only two vessels armed with heavy anti-aircraft guns - 4 inch guns on Caledon and 5 inch guns on Benson. It appears that Morrison's emphasis on the superior preparation and fighting performance of the escorting ships is correct.
