Re: eBAy: Captured german planes

Gents,

Post 748 – Nick, I agree that the aforementioned photo of this Me 262 was probably found at Brandenburg-Breist. The new photos are clear evidence that the aircraft was dragged to a new location away from the hangers. The Americans discovered the trying to tow the Me 262 by the nose wheel quickly snapped it off. What worked much better was to loop a cable over the fin and horizontal stabilizers. Pulling it from the back caused the cable to bite into the fin leading edge and hook onto the strongest part of the tail unit where the adjustment mechanism for the HS inclination was located. The wrecks at Lechfeld show lots of evidence for this methodology. However, here the cable must have slipped of the mechanism and rode up the fin to rip the top of the fin off, perhaps as it was descending a slope.

Post 751 – Steve, take a look at the jeep on the left. The steering wheel is located on the left side to the vehicle, confirming the photo is correctly printed. As well, the pilot seat is in the right position too (left side). You must have had a late shift!

Cheers,

David
