Re: Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
Hi Steve,
F/Lt Malan's victim was shot down at 01.15 hrs and crashed into the North Sea near the Cork Light Vessel.
The crew consisted of:
FF: Hptm Hermann Prochnow, Erkm 55536/1, KIA
BO: Uffz Franz Heyeres, Erkm 55536/8, MIA
BF: Uffz Hermann Wojis, Erkm 55536/22, KIA
BS: Fw Richard Bunk, Erkm 55536/33, MIA
The bodies of Hptm Prochnow and Uffz Wojis washed ashore on each side of the North Sea. The body of Hptm Prochnow was found on the Isle of Shepey and was buried there. After the war re-interred at Cannock Chase, plot I, row 9, grave 353.
The body of Uffz Wojis washed ashore on the causeway Afsluitdijk, The Netherlands, between kilometre marker 18.8 and 18.9 on 13th August 1940. He was initially buried at Huisduinen cemetery near Den Helder and rests now at Ysselsteyn cemetery, plot CT, row I, grave 4.
Unfortunately I've no code or Werknummer of this He.111, might be difficult for early 1940 losses...
Perhaps somebody else can add more details?
Regards,
Hans Nauta
