Re: Miles Hoopla flying bomb project

Hi Brian,
I have some infos about this plane from an article of one Issue of „Luftfahrt International“.
According to this article, the Hoopla flying bomb had its origins from a project from as early as 1927 called Larynx that had been tested in the Iraq desert in 1929.
In 1939 Miles remembered this project and built the Hoopla, which was intended to carry a 1000 lbs-bomb for about 400 miles = 600 km. However, the ministry for aircraft production did not approve the Hoopla with following reason: “An unmanned bomb is beneath contempt, because the place of impact could not be controlled accurately and also residential districts and hospitals could be hit”. According to the article, this decision is on record!
Kind regards
Robert
