Re: 201 Sqn Sunderland loss 3rd December 1941
Hallo Fana,
The crew of W3988 were tasked to provide anti-submarine escort to an outbound convoy from Britain, but they did not find it. (BTW does anyone know which convoy this was ?)
They became lost in the very bad weather which prevailed that day. Unfortunately the wireless set became inoperative as well, thus compounding their problems. Fuel was running low so a landing was imperative. Though flying along the west coast of Ireland for some hours they were unable to establish their position. During the landing a float broke away, causing the aircraft to tip over.
Hope this helps. What is your own interest in this particular loss ?
Regards,
Martin Gleeson.
