B-17 ditched July 29 1943 73 m. NE Middlesbrough

Hello everyone

In the book 'Shot Down and in the Drink' by Air Commodore Graham Pitchfork, page 147, he mentions an automatic SOS message picked up by North Foreland at noon from due north of them. This co-incided with a message received by the 4th Bombarment Wing control from a B-17 in distress some 73 miles north east of Middlesbrough. At 14.20 two dinghies containing the 10 crew were located by a search aircraft and they were picked up by a high speed launch and returned to Blyth by 22.00.

Can anyone give m a possible ID for this B-17?

Many thanks.

Regards

Simon
